Autumn is here, which means it’s time to get your favourite comfy sweater out of the wardrobe and curl up with a pumpkin spice latte. The arrival of autumn is also an excuse to update your outerwear and explore the season’s new trends. If you’re tired of bright summery colours, Autumn represents a chance to delve into richer, earthier shades, both in your wardrobe and on your nails.

Our pick of this season’s top nail colours takes in traditionally autumnal tones and some less obvious mani trends we expect to see on fashion forward nails this season.

Gradient

Not so much a colour trend as a trendy way to wear a whole spectrum of colours. The gradient look has been around for a while now and shows no sign of disappearing this autumn. The seasonal trick is to adapt the look – which entails painting your nails in different tonally harmonious colours – to an autumnal palette.

Tortoiseshell

Animal print has been a big couture/nail crossover hit in 2019 and tortoiseshell seems to be the trend’s most enduring nail art iteration. There’s a fittingly autumnal hue to tortoiseshell nails but it’s also wild enough to carry those summertime good vibes into winter. The look is easier to achieve than you might imagine, start with an undercoat of orangey brown, daub on some dark brown dashes followed by black dots, artfully smudge and apply a glossy top coat.

Paint it black

Chic black detailing over a classic nude base is set to be a strong look this season. Start with a straightforward French manicure but apply black polish, instead of traditional white, to create a sleek monochrome look.

Deep Emerald

There are numerous on-trend ways to go green this autumn. Earthy olive has been a popular colour, but right now we particularly love lusciously deep emerald, as showcased here on Betina Goldstein’s classy green on nude manicure. An understated masterclass in negative space.

Terracotta

Terracotta might be the perfect summer to autumn colour. On the one hand, it instantly evokes sun baked Moorish architecture, but this rusty reddish hue is also the embodiment of autumn. We love this fab gradient mani that spans a full spectrum of terracotta tones and finishes with a fun dash of glitter.
